The Local Area
Glenelg Caravan is situated just outside the main village of Glenelg at Moyle. The area is easily accessible over Mam Ratagan and offers an excellent secluded base to visit or enjoy activities, wildlife and culture locally.
Stunning scenery within the hills and mountains, glens and lochs; the Glenelg area is home to an impressive list of wildlife and visitors which can make a walk or drive through the area that bit special.
The Highlands have long been home to numerous Golden Eagles and are a regular sight here. Peregrine Falcons hunt in the area along with the White Tailed Sea Eagle over Kyle Rhea. A pair of these magnificent birds have nested in the area for a number of years.
The list of birds that breed here also include Black-throated, Red-throated divers, Raven, Buzzard, Common Tern, Eider, Grey wagtail, Grasshopper Warbler, Tawny and also Barn Owls.
Gannets are almost ever present in the summer over the bay or in Kyle Rhea. Despite apparent declines elsewhere Cuckoos are very common in the summer and can often be seen as well as heard. In the appropriate season birds visiting or passing through can include Brambling, Waxwing, Whooper swan, Glaucous gull, Iceland gull, Sandwich tern. Even Ospreys pass through occasionally.
The area has a population of Pine Marten and there are also Badgers, Foxes and Hedgehogs. Red deer are numerous along with Roe deer. The main visitor attraction however would be the Otters which can be seen along the shores. In the sea Porpoise are very common with Dolphins visiting through the summer and also the odd sighting of whales.
